VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ANTHROPOLOGY
Union College (Schenectady, New York) seeks applicants for a one-year visiting position at the assistant professor level. We seek socio-cultural candidates who can teach courses on environmental anthropology and who would also be able to offer courses in some of the following areas: indigeneity, environmental justice, economic anthropology, Science and Technology Studies, Religion and Environmentalism, anthropology of food, and global health. In terms of geographic expertise we are interested in someone who works in Sub Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia or amongst indigenous people of Oceania or the Americas. But we will consider other areas not currently represented by faculty in the department. Candidates with Ph.D. in hand and teaching experience are preferred, but these qualifications are not required. The successful candidate will teach six courses over three ten-week trimesters.

Department members are also active scholars who support each other’s scholarship and who value the integration of research and teaching. Anthropology at Union contributes to many interdisciplinary programs and to the Complex Questions general education curriculum that focuses on global challenges and on social justice. The successful hire can develop courses in their area of expertise that may contribute to the college’s interdisciplinary programs. Compensation
The annual salary range for this position is $67,000 - $69,000. Except for roles with a set rate of pay, the wage/salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The stated hiring rate/range represents the College’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the rate/range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Job Summary | The Department of Science & Technology Studies (STS) in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute seeks a tenure track/tenured Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor specializing in Community Engagement and Community-Based Research and whose research and teaching is grounded in Science and Technology Studies (STS). The successful candidate will extend the STS research portfolio in the areas of public understanding of science, citizen science, community-based participatory research, participatory action research, participatory design, and/or public engagement in science and technology policymaking. They will teach required courses for the majors in Science, Technology, and Society; Design, Innovation and Society; and Sustainability Studies, as well as the PhD program in Science and Technology Studies. The position is 40% teaching, 40% research, 20% service. |
Minimum Qualifications | Applicants must have a Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in Science and Technology Studies or a related field, such as Sociology, Anthropology, Design Studies, Geography, or Media Studies. Applicants must have knowledge of, commitment to, and expertise in community engagement and community-based research. Candidates must also be able to present evidence of effective teaching, and have the ability to demonstrate, through accomplishment, promise of academic, scholarly and/or research achievement. We seek a scholar who will contribute to the STS Department’s broader commitments to socially engaged STS and design of alternative futures. STS features a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary researchers, including historians, sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists, and media studies scholars. Scholarship that takes into account perspectives from marginalized communities and pedagogical practice that values diversity and inclusivity will be prioritized. Preferred Qualifications | Experience in and/or commitment to public-facing, participatory, or community engaged science, policy and innovation scholarship is preferred. |
